Nursing At UF
Wednesday, March 04, 2009
I believe that the University of Florida has one of the most outstanding
and diverse nursing programs available. That diversity and the relationship
between nursing and the other medical tracks available through Shands
Teaching Hospital will afford me the ability to not only learn about nursing
but also how all of the medical disciplines interact to provide patients
with the care and support they need. I am most interested in the Shands
Cancer Center as well as the Labor and Delivery Units. I find that the study
of cancer and pediatrics have some of the most intriguing challenges first
because of the mysteries associated with cancer and secondly because of the
age of the patients in pediatrics. I like challenges and I believe that both
of these areas of specialization will serve to prepare me for almost any
future challenge I may face whether in nursing or in life. Eventually I also
anticipate going into a Masters program to become a nurse practitioner, and
I know the University of Florida will prepare me for this.
Personally, I believe that the nursing program will go a long way in
continuing to develop me as a person. I look forward to working with both
staff members and fellow students to understand and possibly adopt how they
have both professionally and personally used their nursing skills to help
others and themselves. I trust that I will meet many other nurses and
doctors during my clinicals and other activities in the hospitals, and will
develop bonds with them. These bonds will surely result in friendships both
professionally and personally that will shape who I become in the future.

Passionate Profession
Wednesday, March 04, 2009
In the summer of 2004, I had a wonderful experience. I was participating in
a university internship. One night, a woman came into the hospital for
cataract surgery. She was nervous and scared. I came into the room and told
her that I would be with her every step of the way. She gained confidence
and told me that I was an angel who helped her fears disappear. The surgery
went well and once she recovered she told me that I had been a great help in
fighting her fears.
Being a compassionate helper is something that comes naturally to me. My
high schools years were spent in Cuba; over there if you know the right
people, you are allowed into places such as surgery rooms. One great
advantage that I had was that my step-father was a top doctor in my
hometown, Ciego de Avila. I used to spend my free time at the hospital, so I
could become familiar with this kind of profession. I wanted to be a doctor
and this was the best training for me.
At this moment, I knew that I had a calling to help others and enjoyed
making them feel secure. This experience is what nursing means: leading
people to health with compassion, intelligence, and competence. Every day
thousands of nurses lead a multitude of patients to well-being. Nurses are
leaders, regardless of title and position; they exercise leading-edge
authority to influence the health of those in their care. They use knowledge
and skills to make decisions with and about others and accept accountability
to provide care.
As a young student, I am a leader who supports my peers while pursing my
path of continued education, and I seek leadership experiences to help
others. I care deeply about those around me and envision myself as a leader
who guides them to a greater future. As a future nurse, I want to help
patients to achieve their dreams. As I achieve my personal vision of
leadership; I am offering my community hopes and dreams. I am planning go
ahead and pursue a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. In the future, I see
myself involved with nurse management in a hospital.
Over time, my life has changed for a variety of reasons. As my mom told me
one time “Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have
to go through.” I think people choose what they want to be, no matter
what. All of these experiences that I had when I was a teenager have made me
see that I have a calling to help others. I enjoyed making others feel happy
and that someone cares for them. Treating all people the same respect
without seeing their color, sexual orientation and even their race makes me
feel that I have not only helped someone else, but I have satisfied a
calling that I have to be a part of making someone’s life better.

Mission Trip
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
When I was 14 I had an opportunity to go on a missions trip to Haiti and
fell in love with the work I did. I was able to go back a couple years later
and confirm that I really did want to work with children in third world
countries for the rest of my life. I later had an epiphany when a student at
the elementary school where I work needed help. She had fallen on the
playground and shredded her elbow. I helped her clean up her elbow and
bandage it and comforted her. When I was finished, the secretary told me
that it would be a disservice to mankind for me not to go into nursing. Then
and there I thought about the people I had worked with in Haiti and realized
how badly they needed medical care and how nursing is the perfect way to
follow my calling to care for children in third world countries.

WHY I SHOULD RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
At 38 years old, I am returning to college for a degree in nursing. I have
worked for several years as a bartender at a local family restaurant that
does modest business. I do not earn very much, but I am committed to
applying every nickel to my education. In addition to that, I am seeking
assistance wherever possible.
After I achieve my Associates Degree in Science, I plan to work in the
field as a Practical Nurse, while continuing to work toward my Baccelor’s
Degree to be a Registered Nurse.
My son is 20 years old, and out of the house, and I am at a point now in my
life where I know exactly what I want to do, and I am willing and able to
put in the hard work necessary to achieve my goals. I am accustomed to hard
work and sacrifice and it is a pleasure to apply those things toward
obtaining a rewarding career in nursing.
While I am open minded to the many directions a nursing career could take
me, my areas of interest lie toward physical therapy, rehabilitation,
nutrition, fitness and “whole wellness” of the mind, body, and spirit.
I feel that my natural compassion and ability to relate to all kinds of
people, as well as my mental and physical astuteness are just a few of my
attributes that will qualify me to be an excellent addition to the nursing
field.
